Bollywood

Cultural differences, cultural understanding, cultural sensitivity, “cool” is subjective, yada yada blah blah blah

But seriously, not trying to offend anyone but this is friggin comedy gold. When I was a kid in Philadelphia I used to stay up late and watch weird Bollywood Kollywood movies on channel 35 or one of those other psuedo-TV stations.

***Thank you for the corrections and info Sha.

This isn’t Bollywood. It’s Kollywood - Tamil cinema, as opposed to the more popular Hindi cinema with the likes of Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, etc. I’m not Indian myself but I’m quite exposed to the Indian culture and cinema, so I can tell the difference between Tamil language and Hindi language. That isn’t to say that Hindi movies/video clips aren’t comedy gold, because most are totally corny, but the Hindi language is much more beautiful and romantic sounding than Tamil, and the video clips less cringeworthy. The dance steps still are, though. =)

    Cases in point:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1DOh0TNRdk - corny and cringeworthy, but Bollywood. Bonus: English subtitles!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDo-YPwbwdo - still corny, still cringeworthy, but nice song. Bonus: English subtitles!

Note the difference in the language. Isn’t Hindi much nicer sounding? These clips are from the movie Kal Ho Naa Ho. Typical Bollywood storyline - lovelovelove - but pretty good even by my standards. And I’m a movie snob. :)

Thanks for the info and the other video clips. I’m not very informed when it comes to Indian movies or languages I’m afraid (I wasn’t even aware there was a difference between bollywood and kollywood, but I’m not a connoisseur).

Just took a quick peek around the comments on you tube and turned up these
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prabhu_Deva
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamil_language

So seems you are correct. If I listen I can definitely hear a difference between the sound of the two languages but without hearing more I’d be hard pressed to say what exactly the differences were.

I’d have to say I like the somewhat more exotic sound of the Tamil a bit better, although I doubt I’ll be rushing out to buy any CDs anytime soon :)
