Anime girls in point blank gun fight!

Oh, and they reload their guns with their cleavage…
Slightly NSFW! Fair warning before you press play!

To my great shame, when I was about 13-15 I was into anime. Some of the anime I watched had some actual artistic merit, and then there was the rest of it. This was still back when anime was just starting to get popular in the U.S. and we still had to get our fix from bootleg vcr tapes sold for extravagant prices at comic conventions by guys who looked (and smelled I imagine) like the comic book guy from the Simpsons. Pre-Suncoast DVDs and youtube.

At some point in high school I lost interest in anime, and although I went on to study Japanese and moved to Japan, my interest has never really been rekindled. Ironically (or logically perhaps?), I move to Japan where this stuff is on TV day and night, and I NEVER watch it, whereas back when I was a “youngin” I would pay $30 for a shitty-ass quality vhs bootleg… Anyway, the geeky circles in which I travel on the Web are rife with the anime otaku, foreign and domestic, and I am occasionally assaulted with some new crap anime or the other.

Whereas I am sure a lot of my outlook on things is skewed by the whole “what I did was never this stupid” P.O.V. of adulthood, the majority of the new anime stuff that I see floating around is utter crap. Back when I was “into” anime (oh uh, “20 miles, barefoot, in the snow, uphill both ways!” warning) the stuff that tended to be popular was the more underground, adult-oriented, direct to video stuff, whereas nowadays it seems the vast majority is, literally, elementary-school-student-age-oriented-afterschool-hyper-merchandised garbage. The stuff that my peers and people maybe 2-4 years younger than me are watching back home in the states is literally the domain of elementary school children here; Naruto, one-piece, yugioh (I actually translated some of those bloody cards for work, god have mercy on my soul), and the like.

I don’t really have too much of a point here, I just find it interesting that it seems that now that we are finally getting some quality animated shows made in the U.S., the stuff from Japan that tends to be most popular (aside from the porn of course, porn is apparently the single biggest “genre”, economically-speaking, of anime in the states at the moment) is poorly written, and most often poorly animated nonsense that is aimed at making children buy toys and cups and whatever else they can manage to print a picture or logo on.

Even the stuff that is supposedly adult-oriented is mainly just unbelievable fight scenes and ridiculous sexual innuendo, hence the above clip.
