It’s called a hang drum (or just a “hang” according to Wikipedia, but since Wiki is the only source I can find that refers to it without the drum I’d take that with a grain of salt).
Unfortunately it seems you either have to go to Switzerland to buy one new for $1000US or wait for one on Ebay for 3 times that price =P

Why bother with either paying a $1,000 bucks or waiting for it to go on sell at Ebay for 3 times that, why not make one?
just by looking at it it doesnt seem to be that sofisticated of an option
I imagine it is probably harder to get it to sound right (tones and such) than just banging a piece of metal into shape, but even if that’s all that’s required, I don’t have the space or tools to do it in my rabbit hutch here in Tokyo. :)
I also have no plans of spending any money on one, I just thought they looked like fun.
It’s actually pretty sophisticated. Tt has to be made just the right way for the tones to come out right, and it goes through a few chemical treatments too.
I figured it wasn’t as easy as just pounding a piece of metal and getting a perfect item the first time =) But the internet is full of people who like to jump on any topic and decry how easy something is and why it is therefore ridiculous to spend so much money on it.
Not that I plan on buying one, mind you. =)
The name of the instrument is Hang. The Hang Makers Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer asked not to call it a hang drum, because it isn’t a drum. They look at it as a sound sculpture. Wikipedia isn’t the only source for the correct name. You can read original publications of the Hang Makers here.
The Hang can’t be copied easyly. Look and listen to an attempt of a selfmade Hang copy.
Please some one help me!!!!! Im dieing inside. I feal the only way i can get my hands on one is to go to Switzerland and find the dudes that make the coolest thing i ever seen. im offering $2,000 for a used one. As soon as find someone with hang or with 2,000 im going to jack’em. Oh hell yeah!!

Hey, while making a hang drum may be a little more complicated then the average person has time for. Why not check out the propane hank drum. Seems relatively easy to make provided you have the time. I am going to make my first this week. Ill post some picks when I am done. The sound is great as well, if you make it right. Its The cheaper cousin but for those of us who cannot fly to Switzerland to get one…….
The name alone makes it sound interesting. Unfortunately, as stated above, don’t really have the space for one anyway. =)
