Star Trek super geek-out!

So I like Star Trek. Specifically I like Star Trek the Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. TNG started me watching Star Trek, because I can’t stand the original series, but I don’t really enjoy rewatching them much anymore and DS9 is my overall favorite series.

I’m currently watching through DS9 again before finally seeing the last episodes which were originally broadcast while I was away at University or other in some other country or other. DS9 is fairly unpopular amongst the hard-core trekkies (trekkers, whatever the hell they call themselves) for a lot of the reasons that I enjoy it. Unlike TNG and TOS there was a continuing plot with a continuity unlike the single encapsulated stories that were common in the earlier series, and I felt the characters were more real because they had more negative aspects to them than characters from the earlier series (although the lack of negativity was apparently intended by Rodenberry).

Just for the record, I couldn’t bare to watch Voyager, and I haven’t seen a single Episode of Enterprise yet (although I do want to watch a few episodes when I get a chance).

Anyway, I have recently stumbled upon a whole bunch of Star Trek related stuff that I have found interesting so I’ll include it all here in this one big post, video fun after the jump.

First up, the Picard song, live action and animated (using The Sims) versions.

Star Trek the Original Series + Monty Python’s Quest for the Holy Grail = hilarity

And on a slightly more serious note, a touching video of James Doohan, like I said above I’m not a big fan of the original series, but he seemed like a really good person and it’s a shame he’s gone.

My wife and I were fans of “Enterprise”…. I started with TNG too, as the original series was pretty dated.

I just watched the first hour and a half of it, and I think I will continue watching it but I have some problems with it as well. One of these days I am going to write up a big post on it, but DS9 is still my favorite by far.

Raven Shaw loved DS9 as well… it was too much realism for me, although I liked the charactors as much as TNG characters.

Don’t get me wrong, I really liked TNG too, but I have tried to rewatch TNG and never been able to sit through an episode, whereas I just rewatched the entire run of DS9, and I cared more about the characters on DS9, I think they were much better developed (written?) than the characters on TNG.

It wouldn’t bother me much if most of the characters on TNG were killed off (geordie, crusher (both of em), troi, etc. no big loss for me), but other than the one character who was killed off in DS9 (Dax, whose replacement I liked much better) I would miss pretty much all of the characters.

Also I liked the fact that DS9 was a continuous story rather than just an episode by episode thing like TNG. I like continuity and tie ins to past stories and such.

Good point. TNG didn’t have that, but Enterprise does ;)
