Panda Surprise

The Japanese voice over is (roughly):

“Shonyan (mother panda’s name) eats a soybean and bamboo ‘panda ball’ (panda dango) oblivious to the world.”

“tyun tyun (baby panda’s name) is dead asleep at her feet, but suddenly…”

“Wow that surprised Shonyan!”

Nimian hunter/flyer webgames

Two neat, well done webgames created by the same people and which would appear to be set in the same world. Flash has really come a long way.

Star Trek super geek-out!

So I like Star Trek. Specifically I like Star Trek the Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. TNG started me watching Star Trek, because I can’t stand the original series, but I don’t really enjoy rewatching them much anymore and DS9 is my overall favorite series.

I’m currently watching through DS9 again before finally seeing the last episodes which were originally broadcast while I was away at University or other in some other country or other. DS9 is fairly unpopular amongst the hard-core trekkies (trekkers, whatever the hell they call themselves) for a lot of the reasons that I enjoy it. Unlike TNG and TOS there was a continuing plot with a continuity unlike the single encapsulated stories that were common in the earlier series, and I felt the characters were more real because they had more negative aspects to them than characters from the earlier series (although the lack of negativity was apparently intended by Rodenberry).

Just for the record, I couldn’t bare to watch Voyager, and I haven’t seen a single Episode of Enterprise yet (although I do want to watch a few episodes when I get a chance).

Anyway, I have recently stumbled upon a whole bunch of Star Trek related stuff that I have found interesting so I’ll include it all here in this one big post, video fun after the jump.

Sci-Fi Starship Size Comparison Chart

[inspic=59,leftclear,fullscreen,thumb]
A comparison of the sizes of ships from various sci-fi series. Pretty neat if you’ve ever wondered how the Enterprise sized up against an imperial star destroyer.

Japanese Yurei Gallery

[inspic=58,leftclear,fullscreen,thumb]
Image gallery of photos from the Yurei-ga gallery at Zenshoan temple in Tokyo.

Yurei” is Japanese for “ghost”, “apparition” or “spirit”.

The Yurei-ga Gallery is a private collection of Edo-period (1603 to 1867) scrolls with images of a variety of Japanese ghosts which range from sad, haunted spirits, to ghastly, monstrous demons.

Seemed appropriate for the Japanese Obon festival, a festival to honor dead ancestors which is sort of a mish-mash of Halloween (more like Samhain), Christmas and Easter. Essentially the spirits of dead ancestors return but instead of trying to scare them off like halloween, Japanese families gather together to welcome their ancestors back for a visit before seeing them off again at the end of the festival.

UPDATE
The URL has changed since I posted this ages ago. The Gallery is now a flash SWF accessible via this page:

There are 4 links in the red bar under the banned at the top of the page, the 2nd of the links goes to the gallery.
